Victims’ Reactions to Delay: It Costs

As Barry Schwartz suggests, delay entails not only the ‘queue” itself (a social structural aspect), but also “waiting” (the orientation of the personalities that constitute the elements in that structure.) “The study of delay is therefore a task requiring psychological as well as structural and interactional modes of analysis.”11 That is, one must look not only at the queue but also at the subjective view of the actors—of the client and server.

Court delays are a major focus of rape victims’ complaints. The aspects that victims in the present study found most bothersome are shown in Table 1.
